Fraunhofer ISE institutional study; custom hydrothermal cycling rig.

Key findings

  • Cu-BTC (copper MOF) lost 40% of sorption capacity within the FIRST 15 cycles: degradation is front-loaded.
  • Tested 7 powder/granule materials + 3 composites across silica gels, zeolites, AlPO/SAPO, MOFs under continuous water-vapor thermal cycling.
  • Method: short-cycle thermogravimetric screening of powders + custom life-cycle rig for composites; early-cycle screening essential because most loss is initial.
  • Water-working-fluid systems impose hydrothermal stress some structured materials (esp. Cu MOFs) cannot survive.
  • The rare hard N-cycle degradation datapoint.
