New family of solid sorbents for adsorptive cooling: material scientist approach (Selective Water Sorbents)
Aristov group foundational review; fully fetched (open).
Key findings
- Defines the “Selective Water Sorbents” (SWS) / salt-in-matrix design approach: tune salt + matrix to target a specific isotherm for a given cycle.
- SWS-1L = CaCl2 confined in mesoporous silica gel: water uptake up to ~0.7 g/g, ~3-5x bare silica gel (~0.1-0.2 g/g working).
- Theoretical cooling COP ~0.7 at 10/35 C evap/cond; desorption as low as 90-100 C (lower regen than classical adsorbents).
- Early prototype system: COP 0.6, SCP 20 W/kg vs ideal COP 0.70 / SCP 378 W/kg.
- SWS-1L is the canonical / most-promising composite for solid sorption refrigeration.
