Mnemonic
- “ad-” = to / at → adsorption sticks AT the surface; “ab-” = in → absorption is taken IN to the bulk. (Reinforcing aid: “absorb has the extra b, like a sponge scrubber that soaks up.”)

- Adsorption (surface): water on silica gel, contaminants on activated charcoal, particles on zeolites, non-stick coatings, refrigerant on a chiller bed, viruses adhering to a cell surface, chromatography stationary phases.
- Absorption (bulk): paper towel / sponge / hair soaking up water, oxygen dissolving into water or blood, NaOH or amines absorbing CO₂ from air, cells absorbing water and nutrients.
Critical disambiguation
“Absorption” in science also refers to matter absorbing energy from light/radiation (optics/spectroscopy) — a wholly separate meaning from the sorption sense. A solar absorber plate absorbs sunlight; that is optical absorption, not an absorption cooling cycle.
