Key findings

  • SIP construction = three components: OSB facings (meeting PS2-92, max sheet 8’ x 24’), expanded polystyrene (EPS) core insulation, and structural laminating adhesive (ICC-ES AC05). Forms an all-in-one structural + insulated + air-barrier envelope.
  • Air leakage reduction is the headline cooling/heating benefit: a 2x6 16” o.c. stick-framed wall leaks 126 CFM versus only 9 CFM for a SIP wall (~14x tighter). Per Oak Ridge National Laboratory testing, SIPs are cited as “28 times better than conventional framing” for whole-wall thermal performance / reduced air leakage.
  • Claimed 40-70% energy savings on heating and cooling from the SIP envelope versus conventional stick-and-batt construction.
  • Example commercial SIP envelope: 6-1/2” walls + 12-1/4” roofs compared against a stick envelope of R-19 walls + R-38 roofs.   • SIPs meet Type V construction with one-hour fire ratings for load-bearing walls and roof-ceiling assemblies; ICC-ES recognized, IBC/IRC/IECC compliant (2012 & 2015), and can earn up to ~21 LEED points (treated EPS).
  • Construction simplification: SIP envelope requires only two trades (SIP installer + drywall) versus the many trades of stick framing; EPS core is 100% recyclable, moisture-resistant, and termite/mold-resistant when treated.
